This intricate formal dining room ceiling was painted for a private
estate on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, near Redondo Beach, California.
The overall design incorporates thematic influences from two sources: an ornate Spanish
tapestry that would hang on display in the room, and the beautiful marble floor.
The ceiling started with beautifully handcrafted plaster center moldings,
a ribbed dome, and crown moldings.
The plaster ornaments were guilded (painted to look like gold-leaf)...
...and the crown moldings and raised plaster center moldings were painted to
look like old weathered and cracked stone-works.
The perimeter fields were painted faux-marble to echo the floor marbles.
Guilded border elements add to the inlaid effect.
The plaster dome was painted with pearl essence and given a high-gloss finish
in order to refract the light from the chandelier.
